How to use these calculators

Every calculator asks the same question — is this stay better paid for in points or in cash — but each program answers it differently, so each guide is built around the one thing that actually moves the decision in that program: where to find every number, what the result means, and the traps specific to that system.

The one idea behind every calculator here. A cents-per-point figure on its own is misleading, because paying cash isn't free either — it earns you points back. Every calculator therefore compares the net cost of paying cash (room, tax and fees, minus the value of the points you'd earn) against the points price. That's why the number here is usually lower than the one you'd get from dividing the cash rate by the points, and it's the number that should drive the decision. Your point valuation is the yardstick: set it once per program and the verdict falls out of it.
